- Dry Period Management: The Real Formula to Boost Milk Production by 25% in Cows and Buffaloes
Boost Milk Production
Dear Indian dairy farmers, do you know that the secret to getting excellent milk in the next lactation is not during milking, but hidden in the dry period? This is the golden period when your cow or buffalo rests from milking and prepares for the next lactation. With proper management, milk production can increase by up to 25%! Let’s understand how.
What is Dry Period?
The dry period is the time when your dairy animal stops giving milk before calving. This is a strategic break that helps repair udder cells, build body strength and increase disease-fighting capacity.
Two Phases:
- First Phase (until 21 days before calving): Udder tissues renew, body stabilizes
- Second Phase (last 21 days): Rapid calf growth, colostrum (khees) production begins
Correct Duration:
- For Cows: 40-70 days (ideal 60 days). Without proper dry period, cows give only 75% milk.
- For Buffaloes: 60-90 days (Murrah buffalo needs ~90 days).
Buffaloes tolerate longer dry periods well.
Why is Dry Period Necessary?
This rest period gives four major benefits:
- Udder Repair: Milk-producing cells rebuild for higher peak production
- Body Condition Improvement: Energy spent in previous lactation returns
- Liver Rest: Protection from fatty liver and ketosis diseases
- Immunity Strengthening: Power to fight mastitis (thanela) increases
Truth: Skipping or reducing dry period reduces 13-25% milk in next lactation.
Cow vs Buffalo: Know the Difference
Pregnancy Period: Cow 280 days; Buffalo 310-315 days Lactation Length: Cow 305 days; Buffalo 270-320 days
Heat Tolerance: Cow doesn’t tolerate heat; Buffalo better but bathing necessary Feed Efficiency: Cow needs quality feed; Buffalo manages with bhusa-straw too Milk Fat: Cow 3.5-4.5%; Buffalo 7-7.5% (almost double)
Practical Management Tips
1. Drying at Right Time
For Cows:
- Dry at 220-235 days of pregnancy
- High yielders (>18 kg/day) can be dried earlier
- First-time calvers need full 60-65 days
For Buffaloes:
- Dry at 210-225 days of pregnancy
- Murrah buffalo when giving less than 5-6 kg/day
Important: Keeping breeding records is absolutely necessary. Without correct dates, you are blind!
2. Nutrition: Most Important Part
First Phase (Far-Off Period):
For Cows:
- 15-20 kg green fodder (berseem, lucerne, maize)
- 5-6 kg dry fodder (wheat/paddy straw)
- 1-2 kg concentrate mix (for maintenance)
- Body Condition Score: 3.0-3.25
For Buffaloes:
- 20 kg green fodder (berseem, napier grass preferred)
- 5-6 kg dry fodder
- 1.5-2 kg concentrate mix
- Body Condition Score: 3.5-4.0
Second Phase (Last 3 Weeks):
For Cows:
- 2.5-4 kg concentrate mix (gradually increase)
- 15-18 kg green fodder
- 50-75 grams mineral mixture daily
- Give anionic salts to prevent milk fever (consult vet)
For Buffaloes:
- 4-5 kg concentrate mix (buffalo needs more energy)
- 20-25 kg green fodder
- 60-100 grams mineral mixture daily
- Focus on energy for calf growth and colostrum production
Remember: Buffalo digests bhusa-straw well too, don’t overfeed concentrates. Cow needs balanced, good ration.
3. Shed and Comfort
For Cows:
- 100-120 square feet per cow
- Good air ventilation
- Fans and foggers necessary (very important in summer!)
- Shade and clean-dry floor
For Buffaloes:
- 120-150 square feet per buffalo (larger size)
- Bathing pit or frequent water spraying
- Shaded, ventilated shed
- Dry place for lying down
For Both:
- Keep dry animals separate from milking herd
- 24/7 clean water (one water point per 15-20 animals)
- Non-slip floor
- Separate place for calving
Do's and Don'ts Quick Guide
Must Do: | Never Do: |
✓ Maintain body condition (neither too fat nor thin) | ✗ Don’t make animal too fat (risk of metabolic diseases) |
Pay Attention If:
- Milk fever or ketosis at calving
- Placenta (jer) doesn’t fall or uterus infection
- Heat doesn’t come even after 60 days
- Milk 20-30% less than breed average
- Colostrum (khees) quality poor
- Somatic cell count high (mastitis/thanela)
- In buffalo: Dry period more than 150 days (breeding problem)
