How to Identify A2 Cows

A simple way to identify Indian A2 cows is by their distinct hump on the back. This hump contains a special vein known as the Suryaketu Nadi, which is believed (in Ayurveda) to absorb solar and cosmic energy — enhancing the milk’s medicinal properties.

Another sign is the loose skin under the neck, which is said to help strengthen the cow’s immunity and improve the nutritional quality of its milk.

The Price Factor: Is A2 Milk Worth It?

A2 milk is significantly more expensive than regular milk. While normal cow milk may cost ₹50–₹70 per litre, A2 milk often ranges from ₹80 to ₹100 or more.

Given that both have nearly the same nutrition profile, paying double the price doesn’t make much sense unless you have specific digestive issues that improve with A2 milk.

How to Identify A2 Milk

There are two scientific ways to determine whether the milk is A1 or A2:

  1. Genetic testing of the cow – A lab test can identify the cow’s beta-casein gene type.

  2. Milk composition testing – Using methods like HPLC or electrophoresis to detect A1 or A2 proteins in the milk sample.

However, such testing is rare and not easily available in India for small-scale farmers or consumers.

Should You Choose A2 Milk?

If you live in India and already consume milk from desi cows or buffaloes, you’re likely getting A2 milk naturally.

There’s no strong nutritional or medical reason to switch to expensive branded A2 milk unless:

  • You experience discomfort digesting regular milk.

  • You specifically want milk from desi cow breeds.

For most healthy individuals, regular cow or buffalo milk provides all the required nutrients without any problems.

Health Benefits of A2 Milk

A2 milk is believed to be easier to digest and gentler on the stomach compared to A1 milk. Studies have shown that switching to A2 milk can reduce symptoms of lactose intolerance and bloating.

Here are some reported benefits of A2 milk:
