Natural and Effective Remedy to Control Ticks, Flies, and Mosquitoes in Dairy Farms
Keeping dairy animals healthy and stress-free is essential for good milk production. Yet, one of the biggest challenges dairy farmers face is the infestation of ticks, flies, and mosquitoes. These tiny parasites not only suck the animal’s blood but also transmit dangerous diseases, leading to weakness, wounds, and reduced milk yield.
In this blog, we’ll discuss a simple, affordable, and highly effective natural remedy that helps control these external parasites and keeps your cattle comfortable and healthy.
Understanding the Problem: How Parasites Harm Dairy Animals
Ticks, flies, and mosquitoes are external parasites that depend entirely on the host animal for survival. They feed on the animal’s blood and skin, causing constant irritation, itching, and even open wounds.
But the damage doesn’t stop there. These parasites also:
Transmit serious diseases from one animal to another.
Cause loss of blood, leading to weakness.
Reduce milk production due to constant discomfort.
Make the animal restless and irritable, affecting its feeding and resting patterns.
If your cows or buffaloes are constantly scratching or restless, it’s a sign that parasites are troubling them — and it’s time to act immediately.
Hidden Truth: Only 10% Parasites Are on the Animal’s Body
Many farmers try to treat only the visible parasites on the animal’s skin. But here’s the fact — only about 10% of parasites live on the animal, while the remaining 90% stay in the surroundings, such as:
Barn walls and corners
Cracks in floors
Under feeding areas
On trees and nearby moist places
This means treating just the animal is not enough. You also need to disinfect the entire cattle shed and surrounding areas to break the life cycle of these pests completely.
The Natural Home Remedy That Works
Instead of relying on costly or risky chemical sprays, here’s a safe and natural herbal solution you can easily prepare at home.
### Ingredients Required:
Neem leaves – a handful
Custard apple (Sitaphal) leaves – optional, but highly effective
2 liters of water
250 grams (1/4 kg) common salt
Step-by-Step Preparation and Use
Step 1: Boil the Leaves
Boil neem leaves (and custard apple leaves, if available) in 2 liters of water until the quantity reduces to about 1 liter. Neem has strong anti-bacterial and insect-repellent properties that naturally kill and repel ticks and flies.
Step 2: Strain and Add Salt
After boiling, strain the water and mix about 250 grams of common salt. Salt enhances the solution’s disinfecting power.
Step 3: Dilute the Solution
Add 4 liters of clean water to this 1-liter concentrated solution. Now you have 5 liters of herbal parasite-control spray — enough for 10–15 animals.
Step 4: Apply on Animals
Before applying, feed and water the animal.
Use a spray bottle or a clean cloth soaked in the solution.
Apply thoroughly on the animal’s skin, especially around the neck, back, tail, and legs.
Do not rinse or wash it off. Let it dry naturally.
This allows the herbal properties to act effectively on the parasites.
Repeat for Best Results
Ticks and flies can survive in the environment for months. To ensure complete control:
Repeat the application every 10 days for the first three times.
Once infestation reduces, use this solution once a month as preventive care.
Also spray the solution on barn walls, floors, and nearby areas to destroy hidden parasites and their eggs.
